Remembering Jane Goodall: A Personal Tribute by NCWC founder Tallon Nightwalker
From our founder, Tallon Nightwalker, "This old, grainy photo was taken on a wind-up camera when I was a young teenager, but it marks one of those rare moments in life you don’t forget. I had the chance to meet Dr. Jane Goodall during her speaking tour at Colorado State University’s Moby Arena — a brief encounter that today I find myself reminiscing on.
At the time, I was a youth volunteer at a wildlife rehabilitation center, just beginning to picture what a future in wildlife conservation might look like. Standing in front of Jane, listening to her speak, and then standing by her side to share a few words, I felt the weight and wonder of being in the presence of someone who had already dedicated her life to the very thing I was only beginning to dream of — protecting animals and the natural world around us.
Though our meeting only lasted a few moments, it gave me a glimpse of what was possible. Here was someone who had already built a life’s work around the very things I cared most about. It helped affirm that my instincts were guiding me in the right direction. Over the years, I’ve been inspired and shaped by many people, animals, and experiences, but this memory has always stayed with me. It reminded me that the values of compassion, persistence, and respect for the natural world can ripple far beyond our own lifetimes.
Dr. Goodall’s passing today is a profound loss. Thank you for inspiring not just me, but countless others across the globe to pick up the torch and continue your work. May we all strive to carry your legacy forward with compassion, courage, and hope."
