The Wild Calls by Tallon Nightwalker

When I first stepped into the world of wildlife rehabilitation, I never imagined just how deeply it would shape my life. Every day is a new challenge, a new story, and a new life saved. From orphaned baby squirrels to injured raptors, each animal that comes through the doors of the Northern Colorado Wildlife Center (NCWC) reminds me why this work matters so much—not just for them, but for all of us.

I’ve always believed that wildlife rehabilitation is more than just fixing broken wings or nursing animals back to health. It’s about restoring balance, inspiring future generations of conservation heroes, and giving nature a fighting chance.

At NCWC, we’re not just rescuing animals—we’re educating communities, protecting habitats, and advocating for the voiceless. Last year alone, we treated 2,475 wild animals representing 134 different species, each with a story of struggle and survival. Whether it’s a great horned owl tangled in barbed wire or a family of raccoons displaced by urban development, these animals depend on people like us—people like you—to step up and make a difference.

Wild animals face more threats today than ever before. Habitat loss, human encroachment, pollution, and climate change are taking a toll on species that have lived in harmony with the land for centuries. Every rescue we undertake is a reminder that human actions have consequences—but they can also be solutions.

Every wild animal we help is a life changed forever, and I hope you’ll be part of that change. Follow along as I share behind-the-scenes stories from the field, insights into wildlife conservation leadership, and ways we can all be better stewards of the natural world.
